Funded by the Trust — At the Aotea Centre

At the Aotea Centre

The Aotea Centre is the largest performing arts centre of its kind in New Zealand, and includes the ASB Auditorium, the Herald Theatre and a range of foyers, gallery spaces and function rooms. Completed in 1989, at a cost of $128.5 million, it was the fulfilment of a dream for many Aucklanders to have a world-class performing arts centre in the Auckland CBD.

One of the driving forces behind the development was Auckland's first woman Mayor Catherine Tizard. The Edmiston Trust agreed it was fitting that she be acknowledged through a portrait and provided the funds to commission the artist Dick Frizzell.

The Aotea Centre Board of Management decided at the outset that the centre would also reflect the achievements of the visual arts. The Holly Sanford screen funded by the Trust was commissioned with this in mind and to functionally divide the restaurant from the lobby. Due to changes at the Centre the screen was removed.
